Everlane Slouchy knit crew sweater | $88
Everlane Slouchy knit cardigan | $135
Of COURSE I ordered one of the new Everlane boyfriend chunky knit cardigans. Of COURSE I did. Got the email, and placed my order within 5 minutes. no kidding. I’m so predictable.
But as I mentioned in several previous posts, Everlane has been very generous with me by providing some store credit, and I kind of see it as my duty to use that and review things for you, so I ordered the new “boyfriend” chunky knit cardigan in black, size medium. And the u-neck tee in heather gray so I could get free shipping. I know…I know…
And did you notice the new styles are available in XL?? Who’s ordering one?? VAL!
**so, here’s why they go up to XL (in case you haven’t read the comments) – they’re the men’s sweater, called “boyfriend” for the ladies. Hmmm. Not a bad idea to suggest the men’s version as an alternative to the sold out women’s style, but I wish they’d presented it that way from the beginning instead of just leaving that part out. I’ve definitely thought about purchasing the men’s cashmere hoodie, but I knew it was meant to fit a man’s body…and they have had a “his for her” section in the past where items were clearly marked as men’s styles for women, so I’m not sure why they didn’t do that this time.
Anyway, it’s really not a very big deal to me, and clearly won’t stop me supporting them, but I’m a little disappointed they weren’t more up front about what they did with these sweaters. And, I’m a little embarrassed I didn’t catch it myself!! But many thanks to the sleuths in the comment section who did!!
I receive an email about the chunky knit, but thought .. eh .. probably too warm in Calif for this type of sweater.
Monica.
probably a good decision…the chunky knit is rather warm.
I look forward to your review of the chunky knit boyfriend cardigan! I had pretty much given up on Everlane but then they sent me a $20 credit last week, those sly devils. 😉 I ordered two shirts that I had sitting in my cart–the cotton tank and the v-neck–and I’m hoping I like them.
Ordered. I am as predictable as you. I ordered one in Navy. And they gave me a $100 credit this week, not sure why but I will take it! Maybe an early birthday present.
Hi Grechen,
I’m super curious about these new boyfriend styles. But then I wondered (esp. when I saw the “XL” sizing) – are these just the men’s inventory rebranded as the women’s “boyfriend” styles? I’m mainly wondering because I’m worried if they are in fact cut for men that the arms would be too long for me. Just wondering if you had an inside scoop!
Yay!!! EVERLANE listened to all of the feedback and I think we’ll all win for it!
I was SO ready to put that Boyfriend Chunky Knit cardi in my cart….but it’s already sold out 🙁
Hopefully, since it got a good response, they’ll make more of it again?
haha! sneaky 🙂
uh, yeah…that’s awesome!
i hope it’s good.
no inside scoop, but i don’t THINK they’d do that…
i know the sleeves will be super-long on me, but that’s because ALL sleeves are long on me, and especially if it’s a boyfriend style. again, different bodies and everything, but the women’s versions look pretty different than the men’s; much longer and boxier.
they usually do. they definitely do limited runs (or at least put fewer pieces out at first) to see how response is, nearly everything that’s sold out comes back eventually.
I got a surprise $25 credit. Interesting how they are doling them out – I guess based on how much we all spent this year. I’m hoping the loafers restock before the credit expires but I’m guessing I shouldn’t hold my breath on that. There’s nothing else I want right now. Maybe a dopp kit for my nephew? I’d been interested in the weekend bag but it doesn’t seem too practical (little organization inside, no exterior pockets or shoulder strap). The new chunky wool pieces look a redundant to me, though if they address fit issues for some, I could see they might be a dream come true. As I’ve posted here, I have the chunky raglan and I’m happy with it – the knit and yarn are truly great. It has pilled a bit, but the pills are easy to pick off. And yes, it’s very, VERY warm. I’m looking forward to seeing and reading your review of the new cardi, Grechen. I hope it’s perfect for you!
They are re-branded men’s sweaters. Wish they would have put them in a separate section, like “His for her”, which they did before. They will be shorter and wider.
I was ready to jump in on that, but decided to ask. Below is what they answered last night. I think t is totally wrong for a “transparent” company, don’t you think?
Thanks for reaching out! Since the women’s cardigans sold out so quickly, we decided to offer our men’s cardigan as an alternative to those who couldn’t snag one. Design wise, there’s no real difference aside from the buttons being on the opposite side of the sweater. The fit is a little different, but we thought that our men’s cardigan would still look great on women and makes for a fantastic style option.
I’ve included a sizing chart with measurements for both sweaters so you can see the minor differences. Please note, these measurements are all taken when the garment is flat. So the total chest circumference, for instance, is actually twice the measurement. I recommend comparing these numbers to a sweater you have at home to get a better idea of your ideal size.
Please let me know if there’s anything else that I can help with!
All the best,
Brandon

Hi,
I have a question about your women’s chunky “slouchy” cardigan and sweater that appeared today on Everlane. Has it been moved to women’s section from men’s? I am on the waiting list for the women’s chunky knit cardi in grey. I would like to know the difference.
Thanks!
ah…interesting. i don’t think i would have ordered had i known that.
yes, early on, they did have a his for her section of men’s styles for women – i actually ordered a t-shirt (which i love) and button-front shirt from that section. i guess i assumed if they did that again, they’d make a note of it. i’m sort of disappointed and surprised they weren’t more transparent about it in the email and on the site.
i stand corrected R!
No worries – it’s good to know! I had actually emailed CS a while back for the men’s measurements, as I was considering ordering one of the men’s versions for myself as I really wanted one in black, but ended up going with the women’s in Navy instead. I can see how the men’s version would have some desirable qualities for the ladies as well – namely the shorter body length. I think it would have been a good idea for the model in the “Boyfriend” photos to have been wearing a small (what she wore in the women’s sizing) or even an x-small so that people could get a better idea of how the two fit comparatively. By going up to a (men’s) medium, I’m just totally confused by how it should fit!!
Anyway, looking forward to your review on your new cardigan. I received a credit as well, so who knows, maybe I will buy the black one too!!
Oh!!! Now I’m not so happy. Men’s fit is really QUITE different then women’s…WE have hips! Not a good move, as you said, JDN.
Thanks for the info jdn!
Brandon’s answer sounds pretty transparent to me! Since the women’s is sold out, might as well suggest the men’s versions which are pretty much the same thing. I ordered the men’s and love it. I just roll the sleeves to make a cute cuff.
i certainly don’t begrudge them doing it, i’ve thought a few times about ordering a men’s cashmere hoodie…i guess i just wish they’d come out and said it is the men’s style. that’s all. and i feel really stupid now for not figuring it out myself!! 😉
His answer is transparent only after inquiring about the item… Of course, there is nothing wrong with wearing men’s style! The problem is in the fact that Everlane did not disclose it right away. Those cardigans came out as “slouchy” last night and only this morning they changed it into “boyfriend.” Why not just disclose it from the beginning, that it is “his for her”?
I agree with jdn, it’s bad form to advertise the cardigan as a reissue without disclosing it is the men’s version. I notice they did reshoot it, however, so people are getting the one in the picture.
I can’t quite figure out why I am not as smitten with they way Everlane markets themselves as everyone else is. I certainly like supporting a ‘local’ company when possible, and certainly want factory workers to have excellent working conditions. I support other international companies (Icebreaker, Coclico) because of their ethics, but they go about advertising it in different ways.
Having said that, my husband is getting another tshirt for Christmas! Their mens tees are my own go-to item.
Yup. I agree with JDN and Christina. It’s an integrity thing. You don’t picture something on a woman, market it as boyfriend, and not disclose that it’s really men’s until someone ASKS about it? If I was a man, I wouldn’t expect EVERLANE to do that to me with women’s clothes!
