I am NOT a bohemian princess by any stretch of the imagination, but every year when spring/summer comes around (seems late this year, no?) I CRAVE feminine, flowy, pretty, long, colorful dresses or skirts to wear with flat sandals. I never end up indulging that side of me, because it never really feels like “me,” but I do love to pretend. And on the occasion I do give in and buy something printed or feminine or flowy, I try to do it as inexpensively as I can, because that’s the only way I’d get an appropriate cost per wear.
A caftan would be nice though, and do wonders as a swimsuit coverup, and double-duty as an effortless, chic dress for a summer afternoon. The Emerson Fry caftan is one of my favorites, and last year’s version ended up going on sale for under $100 I think, which is entirely do-able, and worth it to indulge my boho side a few times a summer.
Do you have a bohemian side? How do you indulge it? Or do you? What’s your favorite way to wear boho?

I love the boho look, but associate caftans with being a larger lady. Nothing wrong with that, and I’m not body-snarking, they’re just not my style. I incorporate boho with artsy accessories rather than clothes.
I am not bohemian at all, but I’m drawn to certain boho things and just wish I could pull it off. I just don’t think a lot of it flatters my body shape because I really need structure. I bought one flowy cardigan from Winter Kate and although I don’t wear it often, I just can’t get rid of it because there’s something about it that I love. It makes me feel like a cool bohemian chick, especially when the wind blows lol.
I sometimes think I suffer from dissociative style personality disorder, which SHOULD be a new category in the DSM V, where I’m concerned. I have an almost preppy, classic side to my wardrobe and then Summer hits and “Boho Joni Mitchell Mama” takes over. I live in a bathing suit, a caftan (they’re perfect for treks back and forth to the beach, RJS!), flip flops, no bra (much to my daughter’s horror), with a book in one hand and a beer in the other. I think I was born just a little too late to be an official hippie, but in my dreams, I’m Joni!????
Val, I laughed at your response and can relate to it. I’m a huge Joni Mitchell fan, and wish that I could channel her hippie style. I’d also like her voice, too. I might need to rethink my caftan position, they sound mighty comfy. It’s boho baby!
this is what i’m talking about…warm weather = beach, flowy dresses, sunshine….
one of these days i’m just going to head up there and join you val. sounds like a perfect summer.
love winter kate! but yeah, i never wore the piece i did have – well, i did wear it (remember? that long floral printed skirt?) and it was so beautiful (wish i still had it), but sold it because well…i didn’t wear it very often. i need to get better about keeping things i don’t wear, but want to wear…maybe. π
So funny – I pinned a couple caftans recently on my Spring wish list board. I’m normally the preppy breton stripe type, and I’ve long thought that caftans aren’t the best with my large chest, but I find myself craving one this year. Same with a tunic top…..
You know you’re always welcome, Grechen! We have great shopping (I mean, does it get any better than rubbing shoulders with Aerin Lauder in Southampton? ????…Like plebeian me would ever be allowed that close!), fresh seafood restaurants, and the beach is only 2 blocks from my house. Standing invitation!
See? There are enough of us suffering from my new fashion disorder to have a whole new chapter in the manual! ??
Val, I wanna come too! We don’t live that far way. I promise to not comment on caftans;).
OK! There’s room for EVERYONE when you’re a hippie in a caftan.
Thanks, I’ll even bring brownies! I’m starting to think a generous caftan would be perfect for noshing. There’s no constricting waist to bind your belly, just flowing fabric. Seriously, I’d love to meet you and Grechen sometime. Maybe we can convince other readers too, to join us for our boho beach blast:).
um. if this summer wasn’t so packed already, i’d try and organize a 10th year birthday bash at the beach!!! damn…why didn’t i think about invading val’s peaceful oasis earlier π
maybe an 11th year birthday bash? who’s in??
I’m in! It would kind of be like the Lucky Mag blogger conference without the conference part. ???? (But seriously, I’m in!)
Just imagine how much damage we would all do in East Hampton!!! ????????????
I’m already in!!! Great idea, Grechen. Val, I’ve never been to East Hampton. I’d have to hide my credit cards from myself;).
