December 2009

What are you doing tonight? I always go very low-key for New Year’s Eve with a simple family dinner, then falling asleep around 10:00 PM LOL. We have a great year ahead of us in 2010 so I’m going to do everything possible to make it until midnight and enjoy the champagne, and maybe I’ll dress up just a bit anyway…

No matter what you do, I hope you have a safe & fun night and an even better 2010. In her last post of 2009, Madeline Rhodes, our resident expert Polyvore stylist, shows us how to create a special look for under $100:

True or False? We’re making plans for New Year’s Eve, and we find ourselves oh so desperately longing for a fresh, shiny, eye catching outfit… but we are almost totally broke after spending close to everything we had during the holiday season. New Year’s Eve is when we want to feel bold, beautiful, shiny and new– it’s the moment where we ring in the new, exciting 2010, along with all of our new goals, dreams, and wishes. It’s the special night that calls for those killer sequin stilettos that you don’t know where else to debut, or that bold, eye-catching dress that has been standing proudly in your favorite store window for the past few weeks. Here are three looks for you to welcome the new year in that won’t break the bank. They’re all under $100 with a few bucks to spare. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!!

by grechen on December 30, 2009 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

I’m not going to get into new years’ resolutions or anything like that – I really don’t believe in them – but I am going to make some small changes around here in the next year. 2010 will mark Grechen’s Closet’s SEVENTH year…WHOA…and I although I do feel like I’m constantly adapting to meet new needs & wants, there’s always room for improvement. (incidentally, if you guys have any suggestions at ALL, please let me know in the comments section)

One thing I’m definitely going to do is more video posts. My personal goal this year is to create & maintain my “ultimate closet” and maybe you’ll learn a bit from my journey; I’m nearly there now, but I thought it might be fun to do a video diary of my work. I’m also going to create an Inhabit NY color reference & James Perse reference library, and I really need to work on creating and maintaining the body I want (I gained 20 lbs in the last six months because of new birth control, which I’m going to change again, and hopefully eliminate any more weight gain and bloating) so I’ll feel better photographing myself and being in front of the video camera.

AND…I read a LOT of blogs everyday. I try to comment on the ones I find profound and meaningful, but I never get around to sharing them with you. I’m really going to try and post my favorite reads every week, but in addition, I’d love to also create a venue for other bloggers and visitors to post links to their favorite articles every week. And what better time to start than today:

Please leave a comment below with a link to your favorite blog posts this year, or ever…and if you’re a blogger PLEASE post links to your own work, and others’ if you want!! I will edit out the ones I don’t think are appropriate or relevant, but for the most part, I’ll approve all of the comments.

My favorite blog post this year of mine: Why I support Independent Designers

Please share yours!!

Okay…this is it, the last few items I need to get rid of before moving to Austin. I cannot believe all the stuff I’ve given away and sold recently – I don’t know how I’ve managed to part with everything, other than I just know I need to get rid of things, and have just made the hard decisions LOL. Even if we weren’t moving, my goal for next year is to pare down my closet even more to create my “ultimate closet” full of things I love that also love me back :) so a lot of stuff just needs to go. And I’m happy I’ve found loving homes for them. On to the last remaining pieces…

First, I’m asking $175 for this Chloe Paddington “Camera” messenger bag (includes UPS Ground shipping to the US). I bought it for A LOT OF MONEY back in 2007 and never really got enough use out of it to justify the cost. I’m still madly in love with it though. The leather is so smooth and creamy, and it actually holds quite a bit more than it looks. It’s also very easy to carry, although it doesn’t look great NOT carried messenger style. It does have a little dark denim staining on the back, but as you can see from the pics, it’s not so bad. The lock is fully functional (the key is attached via leather strap), and it’s 100% authentic Chloe. Leave a comment, or contact me if you’re interested!

Here’s a picture on me (taken in 2007, wow!)

Next..and I also hate to part with this one…is my Rebecca Minkoff morning after bag in Tangerine. I’m asking $225 for this one, and that includes UPS ground shipping. It’s in very good condition – I think I’ve had it for 2 years? I’m not sure when I got it, but I haven’t carried it for a long time. It does have a very small round oil stain on the bottom, and it had a couple of other very small marks/stains on each side, but I cleaned them a bit with some clear soap and cold water and they’re not noticeable at all anymore.

Outfit: Lounge Lover

by grechen on December 30, 2009 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

outfitdecember302009

This is the exact outfit I wore to Disney World last week (minus the Alexander Wang coco duffel – which is WAY too heavy and special to carry to Disney World LOL) – AND the shoes I wore when I got stung TWICE by a yellow jacket. It flew into the top of my shoe and stung me, then while I was trying to figure out what to do and stomping around, it fell into the bottom of my shoe and stung the BOTTOM OF MY FOOT!!!! I was in pain, my foot was swolen, and I had to walk around Disney the rest of the day, but amazingly enough, I was fine the next morning. Like nothing happened.

Anyway, I’m wearing a Splendid v-neck long sleeve top, Lounge Lover wrap tunic/dress from Net-a-Porter (LOVE LOVE LOVE this and want to wear it all the time. When it warms up, I will wear it all the time…), American Apparel leggings, Tolani scarf, Dansko clogs & Alexander Wang Coco Duffel. And my new watch…Michael Kors white ceramic. Thanks again to my dad!!!
