Inhabit NY: New Fall Arrivals

by grechen on August 27, 2008 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

I’ve finally started to become more interested in Fall fashions/shopping recently even though it will not cool down here for another two months. I’m DYING for crisp, cool Fall weather, long sleeves, and cashmere. I don’t have nearly enough cashmere, only a few sweaters: a very old basic v-neck sweater by Theory, and a cashmere henley I bought from earlier this year’s online sample sale at Inhabit. I haven’t actually “worn” the new sweater, but I do secretly put it on every once in a while to feel how soft it is, and to pretend for a second that it’s not SO HOT here.

I’m now hopelessly devoted to Inhabit for their wonderful cotton and cashmere sweaters. I have two cotton cardigans that I really enjoy; they’re so lightweight, but still warm enough in cool air conditioning. And I admit to keeping one wadded up in my bag for “emergencies”…(I’ll also admit to handwashing my cotton AND cashmere from Inhabit, so far it’s worked out okay!)

So, while checking up on their Labor Day Sale today (there are still quite a few things left), I noticed they’d added some new items for me to obsess over…

I love the muted colors, the fabulous fits and the luxurious cashmere…everything. Now I’m anxiously awaiting my Fall Lookbook which should be arriving soon in the mail…

I haven’t really been into shopping for Fall this season – besides trying to cut down what I buy to NECESSITIES only, I’m not that interested (*gasp*), and nothing is really speaking to me. Honestly, I have more than I need to get me through another Fall/Winter. I may not have the latest boots or jeans, but I think I’ve filled my closet with enough classic pieces to get me through. Lucky for me, I work from home, so I don’t need a lot of clothes or shoes; just the basics. If I buy anything, it will be BASIC cashmere sweaters and this:

I LOVE the owls, and I LOVE Virginia Johnson Scarves/Shawls. I have one I bought last Fall, and I wore it nearly every day. I kept it in my bag even if I didn’t wear it, just in case. It was perfect for movies, traveling, and visiting my boyfriend’s parents house (where I needed a blanket most of the time). It’s pricey at $195, definitely, but I will have my Virginia Johnson shawl forever; it loves me as much as I love it.

More Shawls from Virginia Johnson (also take a look at the new Lookbook, everything is simply gorgeous):

Mad for Martine (Sitbon)

by grechen on August 18, 2008 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

I have professed my love for Martine Sitbon’s bags several times over the years (it all began with the velvet heart hobo) and it’s only getting stronger. This season’s bags are signature Martine: beautifully detailed and timeless. Never flashy, Martine Sitbon bags are subtle without blending in, and luxurious without being over the top. Several online boutiques now carry Martine Sitbon, so they’re much more easily accessible.

Here’s a sampling of some of my favorite new bags…

From Kate Boutique:

From Shopbop:

Martine Sitbon Cuffed Patent Leather Bag Martine Sitbon Leather Shoulder Bag Martine Sitbon Patchwork Leather Tote Martine Sitbon Pocket Tote

Honestly, one of the best things about these bags is their price point – not one is above $500. In an age where now even brand new designers are pricing their bags above $600, this is refreshing in my opinion. My favorite bag (the cream bag from Shopbop) is only $388, and it’s really one of the only bags that interests me this season.

Also check Kate Boutique and Muse Ten for a GREAT selection of Martine Sitbon bags on sale.

New LD Tuttle for Fall 2008

August 18, 2008

I first wrote about LD Tuttle back in 2006 for a “New Designers” feature I wrote. Well, obviously, they’re not so new anymore and I’m proud to report that the design has evolved over the years from the original bright, 80′s inspired looks to edgy, more mature shoes & accessories. One of my favorites for [...]

Shoes on a Mission: TOMS

August 18, 2008

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the mission behind TOMS Shoes, but can’t help wishing the shoes were cuter. They’re not as bad as Crocs (can anything be??), but I can’t get my grandfather’s house slippers out of my head whenever I see these: Personally, if I had the money, I’d buy ten pairs of these shoes [...]

It’s official, the 80′s are Back.

August 15, 2008

If Katie’s pegged jeans and LnA’s zipper leggings hadn’t convinced you already, these will: If you are old enough to have lived 80′s fashion in all it’s glory the first time around, you will appreciate the horror with which I view it’s return. I never cease to be mortified looking at pictures of myself during [...]

New Designer: Lizzie Fortunato Jewels

August 13, 2008

The 24-year old Fortunato twins are creating quite the buzz in the fashion world for their industrial/antique/eclectic designs. And when you take a look at some of their pieces, it’s easy to see why. They source found objects from all over the world, using reclaimed materials as much as possible, and many of this season’s [...]

Fall Fiorentini & Baker Boots

August 12, 2008

I love boots. I love to look at them, and shop for them, but I have never owned a pair. This is definitely not for lack of trying, but alas, my calves are too HUGE to fit into most boots, and I’m too lazy to buy a pair and try to get them stretched (that’s [...]

The Legend is Back

August 12, 2008

AG Legend jeans were my first high-end jeans, and even then, I think I paid less than $50 for them at Nordstrom Rack. (this was back about 5 years ago when I wasn’t quite convinced that I should splurge on jeans…) I loved the style of the jeans, but the wash (very light) was outdated [...]

Kim White Auto Handbags

August 11, 2008

I bet you had no idea a 1975 Gremlin could look this chic? But that’s what Kim White does…takes old automobile fabrics and turns them into super-chic handbags and clutches. Hard to believe that one of the ugliest automobiles ever manufactured (yes, I do remember seeing these on the street) had such a groovy interior! [...]

What’s Next in Denim: Current/Elliot

August 7, 2008

I don’t post about celebrity fashion/trends here on Grechen’s Closet because honestly, I don’t care who’s wearing what. I’d much rather wear something no one else has than something EVERYONE else has (or will have once – insert celebrity here – is seen wearing it). That doesn’t mean I cannot draw inspiration from celebrity fashion, [...]

Comme des Garcons at Shopbop

August 4, 2008

Shopbop has just added Comme des Garcons to their already long list of designers, and I couldn’t be more excited. I purchased my Comme des Garcons embossed wallet earlier this year from Tobi and not only will I not need another wallet for many years, I will never buy another designers wallet again. That is [...]

Fall Maison Martin Margiela

August 4, 2008

Maison Martin Margiela first caught my eye a few years ago when you could really only find it online at Aloha Rag. They still have a great selection, but now, eLuxury is also carrying the new Fall collection. His designs are characterized as “successfully transforming the mundane and banal into beauty,” which I suppose is [...]

UK Eco-Chic: Showpony

August 1, 2008

Julie, owner of Julianna Grove, a fabulous UK-Based independent designer/artist boutique, gave me the head’s up recently on one of her eco-friendly designers: Showpony. All of Showpony’s products are made using organic cotton which is hand spun and woven by a fair-trade cooperative. The designs are screen printed by hand and each product is handmade [...]
