Grechen – I was looking over your blog for Fall fashion, etc. and ran across this post. Love it, so keep it up! I’m a stay-at-home mom who also runs a home-based business and keeps my family on a budget. My friends think I am insane for purchasing Joe’s Jeans, Hobo or other handbags, but rarely seem to understand the fact that I do not get rid of these items. Other items I find at a “deal,” tend to end up on e-bay by the next season – the don’t fit right anymore or I haven’t worn.

And I purchased my first James Perse tee this summer – I WILL be purchasing many more. I am curvy on top and cannot believe the fit wash after wash…

Hi Jann,
Although I’m not half the expert Grechen is on James Perse(can you say “obsession”-LOL!), my new experience with his tees has been very positive in terms of fit (a “sexier” fit, but don’t take that to mean tight–he knows that a woman has curves, so it’s not boxy) and the quality of the fabric is superb: lightweight, but substantial enough to cover. Perfect for dressing up or down!

absolutely! i can’t tell you how happy i am that i pay for everything with cash now – for the last several years, i haven’t used a credit card for anything. that means i can’t buy everything i want, but at least i know i won’t be paying for it forever, and that feels much better than actually having something that i probably didn’t need anyway….

I totally agree with you that it’s all about priorities. I think that we sometimes want the “quick fix” and if that means the cheap tee at Target vs. saving up for the James Perse or Splendid, we go for the inexpensive item. And, in my opinion, we’ve gotten WAY to comfortable with saying, “Charge it!” (witness the current state of our economy).

I am currently in the process of buying a property I fell in love with, everyone is telling me how “expensive” it is mostly based on size as it’s a one bedroom, blah,blah. My philosopy has always been to buy the best I can afford, I have waited 29 years to buy a property,I have been house hunting for a year and I walked into this one and felt at home. I know you are talking about fashion but what you are saying should relate to everything me thinks.

hear, hear. it takes quite a lot more discipline to buy only quality pieces that you'll love, which in the long run is much more of a sustainable way to shop than the binge appeal of h&m and other stores. and after many years of shopping, i can vouch that whether you like it or not, you do get what you pay for. miss sophie’s last blog post..to tuck or not to tuck
